1. I don't believe those versions will integrate. 2.5 goes with 0.9.0* and 2.6+ goes with the 1.0 alpha versions.

2. Where to find the logs depends on your host. Is there access to logs from your hosts control panel?

If you're not a techie, adding the code for custom error reporting might be a bit over your pay grade, so I won't post that. Right now though, if you are not seeing the forum, and it's giving a 500 Server Error, you need to see what that error is to help resolve this.

What version did you install?

I would not reinstall since that's no magic bullet. Do you have access to PHP error logs? A blank screen indicating a 500 Server Error should be logged somewhere. It's possible your server has a PHP function that's been disabled, but is required by bbPress. In that case, reinstalling will not change a thing.

I would try to find an error log, or if that does not exist, turn on some custom error reporting.

Before installing the forum I created one new mySQL DB and one user instead of using already existing mySQL DB. Apart from this I have not made any other change to any other file.

If you suggest to repeat the steps I can re-install it again.

Please suggest the steps to completely uninstall bbpress for re-installation.

You should check all the PHP files for syntax errors. Especially any file you might have modified. Did you modify a theme, install any plugins, modify the bb-config.php?

The files from bbPress are probably OK, assuming they were uploaded properly, so check anything you modified or edited.

Does the problem happen with the default theme? Chances are there's a problem in one of your template files.

Or, possibly a plugin issue. Turn off plugins until your forum works again.

If you have access to error logs, you can look in there and see exactly what's causing the problem. A blank screen is normally a 500 Internal Server Error.

You were right about the templates. I used Dreamhost's webftp client to move my wordpress site. It tells you to create the folder first. I took that to mean the main folders, and didn't create all the many subfolders. I'm assuming that had something to do with why our template folder was not quite there. I could see it in webftp, but my ftpclient on my computer wasn't showing it. Once I'd ftp'd all the files back, the site reappeared.

Dreamhost is saying that can't happen, but that's what I experienced.

Heh, it almost takes video proof for people to believe that it works sometimes.

There doesn't appear to be anything wrong with that bb-config, but you should just let the installer create it for you.

BackPress is included with bbPress when you grab it via SVN or in the 1.0-Alpha packages. SO there is no need to get it separately.

It's hard to tell if there's an error in an edited bb-config.php. I have seen where the secret keys are not properly escaped, and that creates a PHP problem. As you've posted it (edited) it works fine.

I just did an svn checkout of r1736 and that included backpress r153, which is what's available at the URL you posted.

Mine installed cleanly. I did not integrate with WordPress. You can see a one minute video of the installation here:

http://www.chrishajer.com/bbpress/1736/

I suspect a problem with the secret keys in the bb-config.php. Or some other syntax problem with the bb-config.php. If you have a command line with php you can run

php -l bb-config.php

to check that file for syntax errors. That's "php dash el", l for Lint.

Well I used yesterdays Trunk Release (1736) and the Backpress folder from here: http://svn.automattic.com/backpress/trunk/includes/
Is there anything else I'd have to add to the Trunk that I possibly missed?

I don't really think that the bb-config syntax is wrong because it's working with the Alpha just fine.
Anyways, the code for what it's worse:

<?php
// ** MySQL settings ** //
define('BBDB_NAME', 'xxxxx'); // The name of the database

define('BBDB_HOST', 'localhost'); // 99% chance you won't need to change these last few

define('BBDB_CHARSET', 'utf8'); // If you are *upgrading*, and your old bb-config.php does
define('BBDB_COLLATE', ''); // not have these two contstants in them, DO NOT define them
                                     // If you are installing for the first time, leave them here

// Change each KEY to a different unique phrase. You won't have to remember the phrases later,

// to get phrases generated for you, or just make something up. Each key should have a different phrase.
// If you are integrating logins with WordPress, you will need to match each key to
// the value of their equivalent keys in the WordPress file wp-config.php
define('BB_AUTH_KEY', 'xxxxx'); // Change this to a unique phrase.
define('BB_SECURE_AUTH_KEY', 'xxxxx'); // Change this to a unique phrase.
define('BB_LOGGED_IN_KEY', 'xxxxx'); // Change this to a unique phrase.

// to enable German language support.
define('BB_LANG', '');

Hello there.
I'm eager to try out some of Sam's Trunk Releases on my site, but I keep running into installation issues. Since I'm new to these kind of test releases, it might just be a simple misunderstanding on my part though.
In a nutshell, what I did is download the latest trunk, add a backpress release and try to install as usual.
Well, after changing bb-config-sample.php into bb-config.php in step 1 the installer will just blank out on the following steps.

Are these Releases not supposed to support the installer at this point?

Thanks
Rob

Another note, the Internal Server Error yesterday was fixed by correcting the .htaccess file.

At present it reads:

# BEGIN WordPress
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
      RewriteEngine On
      RewriteBase /
      RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
      RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
      RewriteRule . /index.php [L]
</IfModule>
# END WordPress

Yes, wp-config.php is on the root, bb-config.php is off the root in a /bbpress folder.

Other than opening the wp.config.php to check on secret keys and all that, I haven't done anything with it.

Yesterday, I did move the wordpress install to the root. I had worked out all the kinks though, and everything was working well. I did have an Internal Server Error for awhile though, but that was fixed. It was discussed here, http://wordpress.org/support/topic/205960?replies=13#post-862375

I looked at the error.log. I'm assuming it notes military time. There were some files not found this morning as I'd expect. Nothing from this afternoon.

Thanks for the speedy reply. I appreciate it.

What does your directory structure look like? Where did you put bbPress, and where is WordPress? Does it look like this:

/var/www/htdocs/wordpress/wp-config.php
/var/www/htdocs/wordpress/bbpress/bb-config.php

Did you modify the wp-config.php file at all? Do you have access to error logs? A blank screen is likely a 500 Internal Server Error.

If you can't see the sites, you have bigger problems than just integrated logins. You should be able to view the WordPress site and the bbPress forum without logging in.

I was just about finished integrating bbpress with our wordpress installation. I had not called up the wordpress site during most of this process. When I did try to call it up, a white screen came up, no error messages, nothing, just white.

It had just been working fine before I began installing bbpress, but I had just gotten locked out of login (again) and followed these instructions: "To fix bbpress, you need phpmyadmin or a similar tool. Login, go to your bbpress database. Not certain what it's like on 0.9, but you probably need to go to the bb_topicmeta table and perform a search (or browse through) to find a record where the meta_key is wp_table_prefix. Try deleting that record. Without that setting I think bb would look for its own users again. " http://bbpress.org/forums/topic/doing-integration-cant-login-in-bbpress

Not sure if that's what broke the wordpress installation. What should I try? Should I go back into phpMyAdmin and try to add that record back in? Should I just uninstall bbpress and start over again?

I just finished tracking down a similar problem (Blank screen on new install) for a colleague. I think chrishajer may be on to your problem with the key but not all linux installs allow php command lines and my httpd access and error logs gave no useful info.

My colleague had copied the WP secret BUT not the whole thing. He stopped on an escape string ('\') which made php think the last single quote in the definition syntax was part of the key. This made the entire rest of the file part of the text in the definition instead of letting the php interpreter at it. For example:
define('BB_SECRET_KEY', 'Ts[5wi;{?2Sp%\"\');
should have been
define('BB_SECRET_KEY', 'Ts[5wi;{?2Sp%\"\'} 4N_zAd6');

You can see in the first example that the escape character "\" is what breaks the rest of the file for php. If your WP key is ending with "\" (right before the single quote) then I would try deleting that character in both places and see if that does the trick.

Happy hunting
