Jleuze,
It's great news for me what you explain here.
Now my idea is just to stop at the first step. I'll try migrating to vBulletin and stay there. I think it will be the best...
Thank you for sharing your experience.

Hi sbricchiLIN, I did come up with a solution to migrate a forum from YAF to bbPress.

But I had to do a 3 step migration to do it: YetAnotherForum to vBulletin to phpBB to bbPress.

It's a tedious process, and not perfect, but I got the forums converted!

Basically, in all my research the only converter for YetAnotherForum.NET that I could find it vBulletin. So that's the first step. unfortunately it is commercial, and closed source, but a $100 is much cheaper than paying someone to convert it for you!

vBulletin has a tool called ImpEx that can import a YAF forum into vBulletin. But it is tricky since YAF uses MSSQL, and you want to convert to MySQL on vBulletin. I did all this on my local machine running Windows, with a MSSQL server to run the YAF database and WAMP to run vBulletin.

I did not have YAF installed locally and running, just the database. You probably want to get your YAF forums running on a local Windows machine as a first step. The YAF to vBulletin importer is old and totally unsupported, so it is crude, but better than nothing. I was only able to import about 80% of my forum content, and I lost a user account. But one user out of 600 seemed a small price to pay.

I think the loses were due to funky characters and long titles, so if you have a local install of YAF, you can fix those things before you import.

After you get the data into vBulletin, it is a much smoother process. There is of course a lot of converters for phpBB, and converting from phpBB to bbPress is pretty easy.

In the end, the migration went ok, I had some issues with the HTML code in the posts, had to convert some characters in the database, and install some plugins so that the HTML content in the old posts would work in bbPress. But it was all worth it to get away from YAF, the forum members all seem to be happy with the new forum, no complaints, just a few feature requests.

I have really been meaning to do several blog posts explaining how to do all this cause it's one hell of a project, but who ever has the time to do everything they want to?

If anyone else takes the plunge and tries to migrate from YAF to bbPress and has any specific questions, let me know and I'd be happy to try and give a hand!

So yeah, uhh, anyone got a dump of a database for one of these? I don't even have a test install I can run ASP.NET that I know of...

Edit: Nevermind, Apache can do it. Will look into a conversion script, but it'll be written in PHP.

Thanks so much for the links Ipstenu!

I figured if there was a way out of YAF, it would most likely be to phpBB. Surprised I didn't find this in my own searches.

If I can just get this data out of YAF, I think it will all be downhill from there :)

Mad idea.

Convert it to phpBB2 (NOT 3!) - http://forum.yetanotherforum.net/default.aspx?g=posts&t=782
Convert phpBB to bbPress - http://www.iteisa.com/phpbb2bbpress/

I know it's a long shot, but has anyone out there had the misfortune of dealing with YAF before?

Recently I volunteered to move and fix an install of YetAnotherForum.NET, and after looking under the hood, I'd really like to scrap YAF and move it to just about any other forum software, especially a platform that could be migrated to bbPress.

Any mad scientists with wild ideas?

ipstenu: it was this http://ciarang.com/posts/mediawiki-with-wordpress and some adjustments:

1. I installed wordpress on /blog and mediawiki on /wiki and bbpress on /talk
-> for this I added an absolute path with the line $WP_relpath='/var/www/html/krcla/blog'; and set the cookies to point to the root folder

2. some others that I can't remember at this point..

The result is that MediaWiki ends up being somewhat heavier than a plain mediawiki, but by redirecting both bbPress and MediaWiki logins to WordPress, I get a single WordPRess login action -> logged in WordPress, bbPress, and two MediaWikis!

i have spent some time now analyzing the code of bbpress and wordpress.
it seems to me that an update of the old bbpress code (version 0.9.0.4) is unfeasable, because sam already managed to succesfully integrate version 1.0 with wordpress 2.7.1

all you have to do in order to use bbpress alpha with the recent versions of wordpress is to follow the bbpress installation instructions and it will work out of the box.

there is still some work to be done. as far as i can tell, bbpress and wordpess use multiple cookies for multiple paths. the one they share is the one for the root path. so... if you login into wordpress, you won't be logged in into bbpress admin section. this does not happen the other way arround.

it is not recomended though to use the alpha version in production sites. for now, it seems that a downgrade of wordpress would be the best solution.

as far as i can see, by studying the code, wordpress has introduced a salt for hashing the passwords since 2.5
bbpress (my version is 0.9.0.4) has not updated it's functions to include this salt.

the alpha release of bbpress 1.0 seems to take care of this problem, but the file structure, as far as i can see is completely different from the older versions, so a simple copy & paste wouldn't do.

maybe the stable 1.0 release will take care of this issue, but since then (i don't recommend using the alpha version on production web sites) i will try to modify the pluggable.php file of bbpress 0.9.0.4 in order to allow the usage of salts.
i'll be back these days with further details.

i think i remember, that here in the forum are a lot of threads that says:
WP 2.7 + bbPress 0.xx = Nope!
WP < 2.7 +bbPress 0,xx = yes
and finally
WP 2.7 + bbpress 1.0 = yes

So, either you downgrade your WP or you use the alpha version of BBpress.
You shouldn'T get issues with login then...

Reflected in other : Yes
Logged Out from : bbP
Reflected in other : No
Logged Out from : WP
Reflected in other : No

Hi Warren
I am working for WP + bbPress for my college website and I will create accounts in one go. There won't be open registrations. I just need to have the functionality of using same login credentials at both place and logged in at both WP & bbPress at the same time. Students will need to login before they can comment on posts on WP. Can I achieve this with WP 2.7 and bbPress 0.9?

bbpress 0.9.0.4 and wordpress 2.7 intregrate but bbpress doesn't hanlde the roles at all. If a user gegisters through wordpress, all is good but if they register through bbpress, they get an "you don't have permission to view this page" when they try to login to wordpress.

I think this should be addressed asap, but as I'm ready through the forums, I see Sam or any other developer has addressed this issue at all. There are some .htaccess 301 redirects and a small code change you can make to redirect users from the bbpress registration page to the wordpress registration page, but in my humble opinion, one should not have to do this because the whole reason to use bbpress with wordpress was the fact that they intregrate.

Bottom line...bbpress needs to update the user roles to that of wordpress user roles period.

I'm about this close to making my new forums live. I've got WP 2.6 and bbPress alpha tied in together pretty well, but they recently announced the lockdown on 2.7, which means that may come out by years end.

Has anyone started testing with 2.7 yet? I'm not asking if I should not go forward and get my forums started, just wanted to know what kettle of worms I was opening ;)

Here is a Korean language file for bbpress. It is just in nascent stage, but I hope it helps Korean users interested in bbpress.

download: http://www.skhcafe.org/dev/Korean_bbpress_070815.zip

1. Upload the ko.mo and ko.po files to bb-includes/languages. (if do not have it, create the folder.)

2. Edit config.php - find define('BBLANG', ''); and change to define('BBLANG', 'ko');

That's it!

1. 두 화일(ko.po 와 ko.mo)을 다운로드하여 비비프레스의 언어 폴더(bb-includes/languages)에 올립니다. 폴더가 없으면 만들어 주세요.

2. config.php 화일을 열어서 다음과 같이 고쳐줍니다. define('BBLANG', ''); 을 define('BBLANG', 'ko'); 으로.
