It might be possible to create the MediaWiki cookie from the bbPress side and visa versa.

From the mediawiki side, you could do something as simple as

require('./bb-load.php');
wp_set_auth_cookie( (int) $user_id,0 );

Which will create the bbPress cookie. Where $user_id is the user's bbPress id. Since you are using the same user table, it should be available?

The bbPress I'm using is on 0.83... upgrading to 0.9.0.2 on a test server, and then testing the integration with Wordpress and Mediawiki.

Once everything is looking good, we'll migrate the live site to use bbPress 0.9.0.2. Then I'll install this plugin - excited!

Yah Mediawiki is tricky stuff. The worst part is that the cookies don't truly integrate! I used a plugin to get both software reading off of the same bbPress users table... so that works. But you have to re-sign in manually as you click from the blog/boards to the wiki... alas.

Will keep you posted on the plugin!!

It should work with both 0.9 and 1.0, what kind of trouble were you having?

MediaWiki is tricky indeed. I looked at installing it for a minute and gave up another minute later.

Ran into a little trouble installing it... I'll upgrade my bbpress version this weekend!

It's a little tricky since we've integrated our bbPress with a WordPress and a MediaWiki installation... plus dozens of bbPRess plugins. But we'll get it working soon, and I'll send that donation off!

I suggested they change this in the core long ago and let the user choose passwords while sending only an activation link via email.

If you don't need them to verify via a link in the email this could be written in an hour as a plugin. The code for password entry with re-entry verification can be lifted from the 1.0 alpha source.

I do recommend you use my Human Test plugin however.

I have found a developer that can do this for us at a reasonable price.

It will be done as a plugin with no changes to core files. Will include double password entry for vertification, captcha resolution and outbound welcome email containing username and user selected password.

Please contact me admin (at) glamrock.com and we can get it figured out. It could potentially be tested and road ready in a couple of days.

Any takers on developing this project as a freelance project? From what I've read, it has to be done as a core hack - that's fine with me.

I'm open to higher bids to develop this project - $500 sound reasonable? I don't know what the going rate is, and am willing to negotiate.

@johnhiler

Sir, that is a brilliant idea and one that is of great interest to me as well.

Half of my forum members have 'Never' logged on so I surveyed them as I have their email address. In a sample of 100 surveys sent, 28 replied -

* 17 couldn't recall receiving an email
* 7 couldn't remember why they didn't complete registering
* 4 said the password provided in the email wasn't inviting

I think the current registration functionality is fine for a hobby forum but once you start paying for traffic, you will never receive an optimum return on investment.

Also, if you'd like to dynamically add some text to the left (or even the right) of the page links without hacking all your templates, you can use this trick:

// add "pages:" to page links
function text_topic_pages( $text ) { if ($text) {$text="pages: ".$text;} return $text; }
add_filter('topic_pages', 'text_topic_pages');
add_filter('forum_pages', 'text_topic_pages');

This way the word "pages:" appears before the page number links only if there actually are any pages for the results.

Here's something I had made a mental note of quite awhile ago but forgot to do, add pagination to the front-page for the latest discussions. You can see a demo near the bottom of http://bbshowcase.org/forums/

(the following two functions are included in the 0.0.4 version of topics-page-page plugin, so don't use them if you have that)

add_filter('get_latest_topics_limit','front_page_pagination',999);
function front_page_pagination($limit="") {
global $page;
if (is_front() && $page>1) {$limit.=" OFFSET ".($page-1)*bb_get_option('page_topics');}
return $limit;
}
function front_page_pages() {
global $page, $bbdb;
echo get_page_number_links( $page, $bbdb->get_var("SELECT SUM(topics) FROM $bbdb->forums"));
}

1. add to your
front-page.php
template

<div class="nav"><?php front_page_pages(); ?></div>

AFTER

<?php endforeach; endif; // $topics ?>
</table>

2. If you use rewrite slugs you MUST add the following rule to your
.htaccess
file

RewriteRule ^page/([0-9]+)/?$ /forums/?page=$1 [L,QSA]

anywhere before
</IfModule>

where
/forums/
is the path to your bbpress install.

I have been getting reports that registrants on my bbpress forum aren't receiving their auto-generated password emails from my server.

I've read a few threads on this forum that suggest workarounds. But I'm more interested in allowing my users to set their own passwords.

There's a neat Wordpress plugin that does exactly what I want:
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wordpress-password-register/

I don't even need the email confirmation/validation code part. I just want users to be able to specify their own passwords. If bot registrations become a problem, I'd just install a captcha plugin.

Can someone adapt that code into a bbpress plugin that allows for user-defined passwords? I'd be glad to pay $100 to anyone who can deliver a working plugin! Plus I'd be eternally grateful and would have no objections to open sourcing any code that came out of this.

Please let me know!

Yes. In the database, the id of the member who added the tag is recorded (in the bb_tagged table), so if you had an offensive tag, you could find out which member added it. I don't know if there's a plugin to make viewing and managing the information easier than using something like phpMyAdmin.

Also, admins can edit everyone's tags, but a user can only add tags, or remove tags they added. They can't remove or edit other people's tags. It looks different when you're logged in as an admin.

I think maybe it's a bug. I just modified bb-admin/view-ip.php line 11, from this:

$post_query = new BB_Query( 'post', array( 'ip' => $ip, 'per_page' => 30 ) );

to this:

$post_query = new BB_Query( 'post', array( 'poster_ip' => $ip, 'per_page' => 30 ) );

Basically change 'ip' to 'poster_ip' and then it works. Not sure how long that's been broken. I have a 0.9.0.2 installation that does not work, then the alpha r1637 also does not work.

If this works for you, I can file a bug to trac bringing it to the developers attention.

I never knew that page was there so I never tried to access it directly. When I access it in 0.9.0.2 or alpha (r1637) I get no information as well, just the heading

"IP Information
Last 30 posts"

but no data. My guess is I don't understand how it works, or it's broken. Can someone explain or show what it's supposed to display?

I guess my earlier idea about a plugin is already handled by bbPress, but it's just not working.

I forgot about dynamic addresses. Of course. Thank you.

Back to my original question, why am I not seeing any IP listings for the last 30 posts? And I do have 30 posts.

Here is how to correctly install Avatar Upload.

The "Additional Info" is not too detailed.

Here is the instructions on how to get the plugin (currently) on your bbPress site:

1. Download and upload the plugin to your bbPlugins directory.
2. Activate the plugin in the bbPress Admin section.
3. Follow the file movement instructions:
In the "additional-files" folder (inside this Avatar Upload plugin directory) there is several files. These need to be moved elsewhere.

Move the entire "avatars/" folder to your bbPress root directory. (Including the "default.png" inside.)

Move the "avatar-upload.php" to the bbPress root directory.

Move the "avatar.php" (inside the "my-templates" folder) to your template(s) (theme(s)). Example: Move "my-templates/avatar.php" to "forums/bb-templates/kakumei/" (So it is like "forums/bb-templates/kakumei/avatar.php".)

I hope this helps someone :D

The IP address is logged in the database, so you could create a plugin to read that data from the database and show all IP addresses that have ever been used for that user.

I found with most of my users, they are using either cable or DSL and their IP changes pretty frequently over the course of a year.

I tried /bb-admin/view-ip.php.

It came up with "IP Information
Last 30 posts"" but nothing was below that. I'm using .9.0.2

What next?

Is there a way to track what User IP's a profile uses when posting? So this would go beyond 30 posts, and be a historical record.

Take a look at http://bbpress.org/documentation/themes/#templates

That is a list of all the template files and when each of them is called. You'll have to edit each applicable file to hide the things you want to hide.
