It was the BBDB_HOST setting - I just had to find out the host for my database.

What are you trying to install bbPress on? php and mySQL on a unix, windows, mac, etc? Here is a common issue with installing on a MAC and is the database a localhost installation? If you could give us a bit more we should be able to work towards a solution for you! Check to make sure you have all the correct information in your config.php because it isn't able to see the database that you are putting in it.

I am having this same problem at install, "Cannot select DB."

I have only bbPress and not wordPress, so mine is a simple setup.

Any ideas on what the problem could be?

I uploaded everything then went to install, just to be faced by "Cannot select DB."

I had a look around these forums but can't seem to find anything to get it working. WordPress is working fine from the same database.

There should be no .htaccess in your bb-templates or your my-templates directory (some old versions of bbPress included on, so make sure you delete them).

You need to generate the .htaccess file by the method described here: http://bbpress.org/documentation/faq/#pretty-permalinks and put it in bbPress' root directory (the same directory with bbPress' config.php file).

I'm having the same problem. I copied my htaccess file into bbpress/bb-templates and still no luck...

It would be cool to be able to restrict view/write access to threads. That way Mods/Admin could have their own threads to discuss things.

Adding my support... in my old phpBB board i had a section called 'ftl/n' (for the lose, or no?) section that I encouraged people to take their flame wars/immaturity to that only registered users could see (so guests didn't have to see threads descend into madness) and I'd like to be able to get that feature back.

I do need this too. But I don't want it private for the whole board.
I want one sector available for all to read and post.
I want another sector available for all to read but only certain people to post.
I want another sector availabe for all certain people to read and post.

GOT IT, i had to copy my .httaccess file to bb-template/ as well. worked like a charm. LOOKS NICE! :)

i am under the impression that there is a default theme with bbpress, mine is not loading, everything else is working. (Well, its installed and ic an add forums etc), but it looks like its not finding a .css file of anysort. any ideas?

I think it needs to use tables for the User Activity sections.
