There was some discussion about making bbPress a WordPress plugin. This would lead to a complete re-write of the project, but I have a better idea:

bbPress should be a standalone platform, so it can also be run without WordPress.

There should be a plugin on WordPress plugins repo (for eg.
bbPress Forums Integrator
or simply
bbPress
), which would have bbPress as svn:external and load the bbPress files as BuddyPress does it. Basically the plugin could be what can be found here - http://trac.buddypress.org/browser/trunk/bp-forums

This way both type of users would be benefitted - those who want bbPress as a standalone and those who want it to be deeply integrated with WordPress.

Some of my thoughts...

Hi,everyone,

The default tags page is like

example.com/tags.php?tag={tag_name}

but I want to make the url like

example.com/tags.php?id={tag_id},

is there any way to make it? could it be done by a plugin?

I have to do so because using the tag's name in url may lead to being blocked by Chinese government's Internet censorship.

thanks.

Hello,

I want to know the name of the User that is logged in (the name that he is registered, so not viewed on the forum. Most of the time, people change there name to look it better for forum post's and comments. But i want the real name.)
So not bb_get_current_user_info('name'); because then i get the name dat is displayed on the site.

Another thing is: Is there a plugin, or trick to let Wordpress and BBPress more cooperate between them? Because, if i know logged in on wordpress, is must do exactly the same thing on bbpress. But i want logged in on wordpress and in the same time logged in in bbpress too. So then i don't need to login twice on the same website.

Thanks,
Leander

Hello,

Just wondering what the status is on 1.1. Is there a beta available to test?

We really need people to be able to post without creating a account. Also email notifications are pretty essential.

We are tried some of the existing plugins, but they don't seem to cut it.

I just tried to drop by bbShowcase and found this waiting for anyone visiting

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The bbPress Showcase has been discontinued.

The removal of Sam Bauers and the halting of bbpress.org 2.0
was a clear and final sign that there is no interest in allowing
bbPress to become a mature, robust program and community.

By now bbPress 1.5 could have been in alpha but instead
bbPress development has been deliberately stagnated,
which should be a very alarming warning to everyone.

In addition, bbShowcase had only six donations in 2009,
which indicated to me there was no interest in my work.

My code will remain on bbpress.org as open source GPL
for those that wish to use it, however I caution you to
consider bbPress's lack of leadership before continuing to use it.

Jane@wordpress (who i love) has just written a new blog:
http://wordpress.org/development/2010/02/buddypress-for-one-and-all-3/

buddyPress now works with singe installations of WordPress (rather than MU), and has most of the backPress nonsense taken out. It now also fits into your theme automatically, AND can be administered from the WordPress admin panel.

I don't know about you, but i think that sovles the 3 most common issues people ask about on this board.

Given all the hacks that Andy and the buddyPress team had to make to get bbPress1.0 into buddyPress, and given that they're unlikely to do it again for 1.1 (as the functionality added is already in buddyPress thanks to WP functions), does anyone else feel like they're wasting their time here?

We're considering migrating from a discussion board that has custom roles that basically rewards members by giving them unique roles based on various criteria like how many replies the post, etc.

Are there ways to add this functionality in bbPress? I only see Member, Moderator, and Admin so far. What we want would be various levels of Member - no new privledges, but just a new "title" or "role" that gets display under their avatar. We're a little worried that if we take away this feature, we will upset quite a few long time members.

Thanks!

Hello. I am lost; I've been scouring the internets for a few days to no avail.
I thought what I was looking for should be quite easy, but I can't find it.
What I need is a forum-less forum, where all topics would be displayed according to date (kind of like the view inside a forum, or the "latest topics" in bbpress), with tags and/or categories for easy search.
All the forums I find are multiple-forums by default. I can't find one that allows me, if I set a single forum, to display the topics only.
What would be even more ideal is a forum that doesn't make a difference between a topic, a post, and a forum. Anything could be replied to, and nested, to infinity. But I guess this really doesn't exist.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Im having an ongoing help topic about a plugin. Infact, one plugin of many more - all made by _CK_. And I was starting to wonder, is it safe to rely on these old plugins, when this programmer has left the BBPress project, and a new version, hopefully is coming soon?

How will backwardscompitability be in the future of BBPress. Will most of these standard functionality-plugins be built in?

And how will upgrading BBPress take place? I have used hours and hours to customize my Kakumei theme, and will all that work go to waste with a new version? Will it apply to the next bbpress themes at all? Or am I gonna have start all over again?

I spent quite a few years doing marketing and corporate communication, and so far at least I have some basic questions I simply can't find on the relevant websites. (It'd be very nice if the sites contained some sort of "Why you might want BBPress" or "Why you might want BuddyPress" or even perhaps "Basic requirements"--not to mention "Why you might want to install both BuddyPress and BBPress".)

I am a complete newcomer to adding forums to a Wordpress site, but I am planning to take the leap with a new blog site I am about to launch. A few basic questions, please:

From the looks of BuddyPress, it also offers forums by itself...although this is unclear from their site. What is the advantage, of any, of having BBPress either instead of or in addition to BuddyPress? Also, so far at least I have not found on the BBPress site a requirements listing--will it now work with a straight WordPress install, or is it tied to WordPress MU at this point? (With the upcoming integration of WP and WPMU, at this juncture I simply don't want to go through the hassle of installing MU.)

I would appreciate any comments, suggestions, or advice you can give. Thanks!

I would like to start discussion regarding a single sign on feature, and developing integration for other platforms other than just wordpress "joomla, drupal, etc" in order to open up the usability of bbpress and be less restrictive than just supporting WP.

conversion methods and tools for both CMS platforms and forum software conversion "preferably from "phpbb, smf, vb, vanilla" to bbpress of course ..

any ideas and suggestions are welcome

The facebook connect system will be launched shortly, could we use this to login to bbpress and thus integrate with an already 'connected' wordpress site?

So this will be another of my unpopular posts, i've had a whole week of working on bbPress, so this is my 3rd of the week - apologies to all.

It'll really help this conversation if you read http://bbpress.org/forums/topic/future-of-bbpress#post-60022 which is written by the wonderful Andy Peatling who has integrated bbPress with BuddyPress (and therefore into WordPress). Basically, he is the authority on the matter.

I bring this up because I thought today, what the heck are we doing? Wordpress integration is the single most asked for feature, it's the reason a large number of people choose bbPress, and according to Matt:

Strategically the most important thing we need to figure out is how to integrate bbPress better with WP
-http://bbpress.org/forums/topic/future-of-bbpress

Ok, but if we look at what Andy has said, in order for this to happen we need to remove BackPress from bbPress. Except... 90% of the changes from bbPress0.9 to bbPress1.0 was adding BackPress.

So, if integration is the plan (even as a plugin), and integration = no backPress, then whatever platform we build the fully integrated bbPress out of is bbPress without BackPress, or as we commonly call it bbPress0.9.

So then why are we building on top of bbP1.0, when we're going to have to port that code back to 0.9 in the future or worse, attempt to combine the two. Why are we focussing on features that are already in WordPress as standard, given that they will work as via the WP functions once integrated.

How far down the rabbit hole are we going to go before we take a slightly longer term look?

Anyone have any thoughts for a Friday evening?

I am not sure if this is the place to ask or not. I need someone who works with BBPress who can work with me for my site. The original person who set it up for me got too busy and cannot help me now. I need someone who understands WordPress, BBPress, and the integration of both together. That is how I have it setup.

I need someone I can go to when I have problems and of course, I will pay you.

My site works most of the time but there is a problem that I cannot solve on my own right now. BBPress locks up sporadically, usually for 5 minutes at a time. It gets a database connection error most of the time. It does not appear to be the web hosting that is the problem because I have literally been on the phone with them daily for the last month and they cannot find anything wrong on their end. It worked fine when it was setup but as of 2 months ago this problem has been happening without anyone to help me figure it out. It does not appear to be a plug-in but cannot be for sure with that either.

This is the problem I need help with now but there will be things that need to be developed over time that I can use help with as well so I am looking for a "go to" guy or gal.

Thanks. Feel free to write here and I will respond. I don't know if there is a private message option here but if there is please use that instead.

I'm sure this would be a really useful feature for most forum administrators... "Read-only forums"
Can you add the ability to create read-only forums in the admin tools area? I know there is a read-only plugin for bbpress but it is no longer supported (last update was in 2008).
This would be such a great feature. I want to set up a forum topic that is informational for forum users, one that I don't want users posting to.

I figure she built it so she'd be the best one to convert it. my email is deryk[@] bluemandala.com. maybe just pass that on to her if you know her address. thanks.
