bbPress 2.0 now available!

September 21, 2011 8:42 am — Development,Releases — John James Jacoby

In hot pursuit of BuddyPress 1.5 follows bbPress 2.0!

No longer are the days of elaborate xml-rpc connections or impossible to figure-out cookie configurations! No more are the integration woes, complex theme arrangements, or separate dashboards! bbPress 2.0 represents a complete rethink of how to fit forums inside WordPress in the simplest, most elegant way possible.

Simply by activating bbPress 2.0, any standard WordPress theme is suddenly capable of having support forums, user profiles, topic tags, and custom topic views. Your users are able to mark topics as favorites to read them later, and can subscribe to be notified via email to topic replies, so they never miss out on the conversation.

bbPress 2.0 comes with Akismet and BuddyPress functionalities baked-in, so if you’re already using either plugin, no additional configuration is required.

If you already have a previous version installed, updating to 2.0 is easy with the bbPress Importer. Move your bbPress 1.0 powered content into your new WordPress/bbPress installation and you’re ready to go. (There is already a migration plugin in the works for other forum software that promises to be pretty amazing, too!)

If you’d like to see bbPress 2.0 in action, a few brave developers have been using it on their live sites already:

In the coming weeks we’ll be moving our own forums onto bbPress 2.0, adding a codex to improve the documentation, and doing some general housekeeping here at bbpress.org. We’ve put a lot of work into rebuilding the software, now it’s time to rebuild the site to properly support it!

Props for 2.0 go out to: andy, anointed, boonebgorges, christopher-jon, Coolkevman, cnorris23, dimadin, DJPaul, duck_, dudd, Fartlek, GautamGupta, greenshady, jaredatch, jghazally, Jason K, Kaspace, markmcwilliams, mouratidis, nacin, Nightgunner5, petemall, ryangannon, ryanimel, ramiy, scribu, schrepel, sorich87, vanillalounge, Viper007Bond, westi, and wonderboymusic.

  3. Rev. Voodoo says:

Congrats, and good job! It’s been running live on VoodooPress since back in beta. Thanks for giving me a good forums solution. I’d been through standalones, and just about every plugin out there. Nothing worked right. I just wanted something lightweight, that integrated well.

Congrats, and thanks for the hard work. This has been live on VoodooPress since early beta. And relatively bug free since then! After many standalone forums, and a variety of plugins that never got it right, all I wanted was a lightweight forum without bloat that integrated well with WP. I think you guys have done that for me!

  6. Laurent says:

Why are they brave? Does that imply bbPress v2 was never properly tested?

Great news! I had heard things were in the works but I didn’t realize the big update was already out. I’m starting a forum project soon and was considering bbPress (although the last time I worked with it it was a bit bulky) but this makes the decision for me. Thanks Mr Jacoby!

One thought—it might be helpful for some folks if you made a more noticeable announcement on the bbPress homepage. I stopped by earlier and at a glance it looked like business as usual. It wasn’t until I started searching the web for news that I found this announcement.

  47. Ben says:

Very Good Plugin. Only translation for other languages are missing. Here is for example an german tranlation http://wemaflo.net/bbpress/

  48. Jon says:

Hi, I am toying with the idea of adding a forum to my wordpress blog and this seems a sensible option. Can we use the same theme? It is just a matter of installing the files, creating a new database and uploading / linking the same theme?

  49. bob says:

So I see all the hoopla about this plugin, I download it, it says it sets up automatically… nope doesn’t do that. Ok, I can use the short codes. There are several references to the integration with WP and the User Role Map in the Settings area… nope unless I have a different plugin, there is no such thing. So does it integrate or doesn’t it. Is this a real plugin or a temporary toy that someone forgot about?

  50. Congrats! Integrating BBPress 2.0 in my site has been absolutely painless. That’s the hallmark of job well done.
