@Regis - I don't think any extra hooks would be needed in WordPress core than what is already there, for things like profile pages etc. BuddyPress already has profile pages so I'm assuming either the same plugin or a similar one could be used for that functionality. Or alternatively, Matt suggested using shortcodes for quite a few things. So a profile page could simply have a shortcode dumped into it. This would allow for easily adding different content to the profile pages and a bunch of other advantages, albeit I think there would probably need to be some sort of auto-shortcode page adding functionality built into it, otherwise users would need to go through a whole list of pages they needed to create and add shortcodes for before their forum was ready for action.

I agree with Ryan about the lightboxing. Profiles and login pages *need* templates. WP is popular for it's flexability. If you do pop-overs do them unobtrusively in a default theme, don't build them into the core.

Rewriting bbPress as a wordpress plugin sounds good. As part of WordPress bbPress would gain all the functionality of wp core plus lots of plugin functionality (analytics, openID, maps) for free, not to mention ease of integration. Still, that's a serious rewrite of both bbPress and WordPress. WordPress would need to provide hooks for bbPress functionality like profile pages and bbPress would need to be changed to utilize those hooks.

Good to see bbPress isn't dead.

@Chris - FaceBook connect or some sort of standard OpenID system might be a better option to use than IntenseDebate.
